Description:
Explore the beautiful, expressive art of Sumi-e, also known as Japanese ink wash painting, in this beginner-friendly online painting workshop. I have a deep love for this type of painting after studying it in college for a full semester
In this introduction to Sumi-e, weβll slow down and explore the expressive brushwork behind this traditional painting style. Weβll practice basic brush techniques while learning how to create bamboo, leaves and simple birds using variations in pressure, movement, ink, and water. And donβt worry if you want to join and you donβt have ink then you can use black watercolor and sepia watercolor.
Material Suggestions:
I like to use newsprint and 140lb watercolor paper when practicing. Newsprint is nice because I go through so much while practicing all my mark making.
For brushes, you can use a traditional Sumi-e brush or a round brush. Iβll be using a few different sized watercolor round brushes and a flat brush.
Black Ink is traditionally what is used in Sumi-e painting. If you donβt have ink you can use black watercolor. I am also gonna use a walnut ink.
"The purpose of my workshops is to help you embrace your creative spirit and take creative chances together. In the process I want you to experience something new and have fun. This is why my workshops are open to all skill levels, so whether you have never picked up a paint brush or paint on the regular, I structure my classes to be open to all students." - Rachel
Rachel graduated with her BFA in Painting and since has taught 1000βs of students how to create beautiful pieces through watercolor. She is a published author of "Watercolor Botanical Garden: A Modern Approach to Painting Bold Flowers, Plants, and Cacti" You can learn all about it and get your copy here
